It is phenomenal that there are many different discoveries still being on this rock called Earth. From the largest of fossils to the tiniest of micro-organisms, scientists are finding new things. So when in recent months scientists have announced the discovery of new spiders belonging to the Maratus classification in Southeast and Southwest Australia, many people have been in awe over this new development. You are probably thinking who cares about creepy, crawling, grotesque spiders? But these little guys are adorable and cute, yes cute. We are talking about the Peacock Spider and today, we at Always Ready Pest Control would like to discuss the basics and briefly account for a few of the latest additions to the Salticidae family.

Identification of Jumping Spiders

There are 67 total named species and subspecies of peacock species, which average 1/8” in size. Like many animals in the wild, the females are fairly plain and drab in appearance where the males are featured with bright colors and unique patters; designed to entrance the females. The males will perform a ritual dance to impress the females as part of the courtship prior to mating. As these spiders are so small, if they bit a human, their small jaws are incapable of penetrating and their venom delivered with a bit isn’t a large enough dose to be a health risk for people. Peacock spiders are jumping spiders and as such, they do not spin webs, but rather they will stalk their prey and pounce, similar to a lion’s methods. They are capable of taking down prey 3-4 times their size, which often consists of crickets and other spiders. One of the newest discoveries of the peacock spiders is the “blue-face” spider, of the scientific name, Maratus personatus spider. Their distinctive markings make them easy to identify, because the male’s characteristic includes a bright blue mask pattern on its back. Unlike other peacock spiders, the blue-face spider extends a unique fan-like abdomen and blue mask with its white-colored banding coloring to lure in a female after getting her attention by raising a single leg and waiving it in the air. The rightfully named the Electricus spider is another among the newest additions as the markings looks reminiscent of a circuit board; consisting of a pattern made up of parallel red lines on its back. Another is the trigonus spider that has their own unique characteristics that stands out amongst peacock spiders, which is the white crown at the tips of its abdomen. The Cristatus peacock spider that resembles the patter of a Union jack as its back and is easily discernible among the crowds. This spider sticking up from its back has 8 plumes of long white hairs; very similar to that of a peacocks tail that is made up of the plume feathers.
